Grass Roots Organizing

Background

Education is crucial to bridging the achievement gap. It alone, however, is not enough, due to the many influences and factors outside the school that affect a child’s ability to learn including illiteracy, homelessness, lack of parental involvement, and limited access to public-health facilities. Those involved in the Grassroots Research Bridge will work with our students and parents to learn about their daily challenges and to provide them services that will meet their needs and improve their opportunities for success.

Current Project(s)

Community Resource Assessment Study

The goal of this study is to give Urban Bridge Builders a better understanding of the socioeconomic and academic needs of Potomac Gardens/Hopkins residents. Our objective is to identify priority services (such as workforce development and literacy classes, improved housing conditions, daycare, etc.) available and/or needed in the community. We will engage community residents in the process, gathering their opinions concerning the development and accessibility of services within their community, their satisfaction with those services, and, ultimately, what are their particular needs.
